How To Shutdown a Pc or Remote PC Via CMD(Command Prompt)


We all are shutdown our computers using the facility button given within the Start menu.
Few people use the physical power button on our CPU's.
Very few people actually use other means of shutting down a computer like a command prompt to shut down a computer.

 A reason for this is many people do not know that the prompt can be wont to not only shutdown, restart or sign off our computer instantly but also to shut down a foreign(a remote pc) computer provided you've got administrative access. It also can be wont to hibernate a computer and provides a comment containing the rationale for the shutdown.
This post will show you how to do all this.

Requirements:

 A computer running Windows (XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, or 10) with the prompt working perfectly, i.e. not disabled by a virus.

Initial Steps:
  • Press Windows Key + R.
  • Enter CMD and press Enter.

Shutdown Local Machine (Your Computer)

 Type "shutdown -s" without the quotes within the prompt and press Enter.
Shutdown is that the command being executed and therefore the switch -s tells the pc to shutdown.

Restart your Local Computer  Type "shutdown -r" within the prompt and press Enter.
In this case, the command switch -r is telling the pc to restart after shutdown.

Log Off the Current User Type "shutdown -l" within the prompt and press Enter.
The -l command switch tells the pc to sign off.

Shutdown a Remote Computer Type "shutdown -s -m \\name of the computer" within the prompt and press Enter.
Replace \\name of the pc with the particular name of the remote computer you're trying to shutdown.

As mentioned earlier, you want to have administrative access to the pc you're trying to shutdown. To know if you've got administrative access, press Windows key + R then type the name of the pc and press Enter.

 Note: If you do not remember the name of the remote computer, you'll search for it by opening an inventory of all the computers you've connected to by executing "net view" in command prompt.
 If you'll hook up with the pc, you'll be asked to log in together with your username and password. Upon entering the password, a window will open to display the list of all the directories available to you.
This should assist you to know whether you'll or cannot shutdown the remote computer.

Hibernate a Local Computer

 Type the command "Rundll32.exe Powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState" without the quotes and hit Enter. Your computer should hibernate, if it doesn't, then you want to enable hibernation to try to this.

Shutdown your or a remote pc after a selected time

 Type this to shutdown your computer after 60 seconds "shutdown -s -t 60" please enter this without quotes.
Upon executing this, a countdown timer displaying a warning message are going to be shown. This command uses the -t command switch followed by a variable (which is 60 during this case) which represents the number of seconds after which the pc will shutdown.

Display a Message containing the reason for the shutdown
